Environmental monitoring of infrastructures begins in the partial planning stage in order to minimise any effect on natural heritage and then continues in the works phase, as qualified practitioners are always present during construction. In view of the exposure to which different environmental aspects are subject during construction and operation they are of particular interest and warrant close environmental monitoring.

Pursuant to the management company’s environmental policy, environmental studies were conducted to assess possible impacts from construction to operation.

During the construction phase, EDIA undertook to ensure a high environmental performance and has been defining strategies and methodologies for the purpose, including insertion of environmental management requirements in contract specifications. These requirements (minimisation measures) are set out in the form of an Environmental Management System (under NPEN ISO 14 001:2004 – environmental management systems. Requirements and guidelines for use). This ensures compliance with environmental laws and minimisation of potential negative impacts of works.

Abiding by its environmental policy, EDIA has included itself in the “principle of accountability” and fostered studies and monitoring on environmental issues to mitigate the negative effects of the construction and operation of large infrastructures. Environmental management measures, environmental monitoring of the construction phase, internal audits during post-evaluation of the project and compliance with all measures in the EIS and compliance of the execution project with the EIS resulting from other environmental assessment procedures are therefore in place.
