Alqueva Multipurpose Project (EFMA) has changed the operation of a vast  agricultural area, for which water is the main limitation. Its supply now come from a number of reservoirs that are connected to each other and to a common source, the Alqueva Reservoir.

The change from dry to irrigated agriculture or just a change in water source in irrigated areas can influence the soil, and the changes must be monitored.

Firstly, the benchmark position is characterised before any supply of water from the EFMA so that the soil characteristics in the irrigated area can be monitored throughout the life of the associated irrigation project.

It is hoped that the combined results of soil and water monitoring and all available information in each infrastructure area will foster sustainable agricultural development, conservation of natural resources and the renewed agricultural potential that EFMA offers.
